Spouse, dependent, and important contact information can be added to a primary contact. Linking connections to a primary contact allows practitioners to quickly and easily find and view spouse, dependent, or important contacts from within a primary contact.
Additionally, connections can be marked as Inactive contacts to hide them from the contacts list and prevent them from counting towards your contact billing. For more on marking connections as inactive, refer to the Mark connections as inactive contacts article.
Link a Spouse's Information
Best Practice for Spouses: The best way to keep spouses organized in Canopy is to:
- Add each person as an individual client
- Mark the secondary spouse as inactive
- Link them to the primary client's record
Linking the secondary spouse allows you to still communicate with both parties without the inactive spouse counting toward your contact limit!
1. Click Contacts on the global navigation bar.
2. Click on Contact List and search for the primary contact.
- Alternatively, you can input a client's name into the search box to quickly navigate to their profile.
- The primary contact is the contact you wish to add a connection to. The primary contact should not be inactive.
- The Client's Profile loads.
3. To add a spouse, click on the plus icon in line with the Spouse box on the left side.
4. Input the name of the spouse.
- If the spouse has not already been created as a contact in Canopy, click Create New Contact after inputting their name.
- To learn more, read the Add a Contact article.
5. Select the spouse and click Save.
Only one spouse is allowed to be added as a connection.

Link Important Contacts
In addition to spouses and dependents, you can add additional important contacts under a primary contact. This would typically be done when handling business accounts.
Best Practice: We recommend that you add an Individual as an important contact within the Business record. You will see the business as a linked contact on the corresponding individual client record.
Just because a client is linked does not mean they have automatic access to that client's portal. You still need to invite these users to the Client Portal. See this article for more info!
