Upload the Import Template

Make sure your beautifully filled-out spreadsheet is saved as an .xlsm file, then navigate to the import clients window.

Upload Steps:

  • Click on Clients in the global navigation bar.

  • Select Client List.

  • At the top right corner click on the three dots.

  • Select Import clients.

  • You can either drag and drop your list into the Upload box or click on the Upload from Computer button to select your file.

You will need to name your import and it will begin processing.

You can cancel your import at any time. This will cancel the entire process and you will need to upload the template again.

Map Custom Fields

The first step of the process is mapping any custom fields you have added. If no custom fields were added you will not have to worry about this step.

When ready, your import will show a status of Review custom fields. Click on the status to start the mapping process.

When mapping you will need to either match to a previously created custom field or create a new one.

  • You can use the drop-down for each column to select an option. You will see a list of any custom fields previously created in Canopy. Down at the bottom, you will see Create new.

  • When mapped the column will change from grey to blue.

  • You can also select "Do not Import" if you don't wish to import the field.

When you have finished mapping your custom fields select "Confirm custom fields" at the top. Your import will start processing again to check for any errors.

Errors

The next step is to review any errors. In processing if any errors are found your import will show a status of Review errors. These errors will need to be fixed in order to upload any clients.

When you select the status, you are taken to a screen to review the error messages.

Errors occur when information is not added in the correct format. Each message will detail why there has been an error. Your import is organized by clients and contacts, so make sure you review both by selecting the Clients or Contacts tab at the top.

You need to fix each error in your Excel workbook, cancel the upload, and start the upload process with your fixed file. You will have to map your custom fields again, but once processed without any errors you will move on to preview your import.

Preview

The final step is to preview your import. Once your file is ready for upload your import will show a status of Preview Import.

Click on Preview Import to navigate to the preview page.

Please take a moment to review your data. You want to ensure you don't have any duplicate clients or contacts.

Now is your chance to cancel and change anything if needed. If your import looks good you can complete the import by clicking on the button in the top right.

Your data will start uploading into Canopy. This could take some time depending on the size of your file.
