Home Permissions


✅ Admin Tab

Controls whether users can view the Admin tab on the Home page.

What this permission allows

  • Access to the Admin tab on the Home page

  • Visibility into:

    • Client referrals

    • Client growth metrics

    • Workload information

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

    • If a user does not have this license, enabling the permission has no effect

When this permission is turned off

  • The Admin tab is removed from the Home page

  • Users cannot view client referral, growth, or workload information from Home


Client Permissions



✅ Access to All Clients, Contacts, & Client Groups

Controls whether users can access clients they are not assigned to, along with all related records.

What this permission allows

  • View all clients, including those the user is not assigned to

  • Access associated:

    • Contacts

    • Client groups

    • Work

    • Files

    • Billing

    • Time entries

  • View unassigned contacts and client groups

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

    • Transcripts and Notices

Other permissions affected

  • Turning this permission off automatically disables:

    • Create and Edit Client Groups

    • Import Clients & Contacts

    • Delete Client Groups

    • Billing Dashboard / Revenue Reports

    • WIP Report

When this permission is turned off

  • Users can only see clients they are assigned to

  • Users cannot access:

    • Unassigned clients

    • Contacts, client groups, work, files, billing, or time tied to unassigned clients


✅ Create and Edit Clients & Contacts

Controls whether users can create new clients and contacts and edit existing client or contact information.

What this permission allows

  • Create new client records

  • Create new contacts

  • Edit existing client information

  • Edit existing contact information

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

    • Transcripts and Notices

Other permissions affected

  • Turning this permission off automatically disables:

    • Create and Edit Client Groups

    • Import Clients & Contacts

    • Manage Active/Inactive Clients

    • Delete Client Groups

When this permission is turned off

  • The Create Client button is removed

  • The Add Contact button is removed from the Contacts page

  • Users cannot:

    • Edit existing client information

    • Edit existing contact records

  • Users can still:

    • Assign a Client Owner in bulk

    • Manage client assignments on individual records or in bulk

    • Archive client records

  • Users cannot inactivate clients



✅ Create and Edit Client Groups

Controls whether users can create and manage client groups, including adding or removing clients.

What this permission allows

  • Create new client groups

  • Edit existing client group details

  • Add clients to a client group

  • Remove clients from a client group

Important considerations

  • This permission is only available when both of the following permissions are enabled:

    • Create and Edit Clients & Contacts

    • Access to All Clients, Contacts, & Client Groups

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

    • Transcripts and Notices

Other permissions affected

  • Turning this permission off automatically disables:

    • Delete Client Groups

When this permission is turned off

  • The Create and Edit buttons are removed from the Client Groups page

  • Users cannot add clients to a client group from a client record


✅ Assign Clients to Team Members

Controls whether users can assign clients to team members within Canopy.

What this permission allows

  • Assign team members to client records

  • Update client assignments on individual client records

  • Manage client assignments in bulk

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

    • Transcripts and Notices

When this permission is turned off

  • Users cannot assign or update team members on client records

  • Client ownership and assignment fields are read-only

  • Bulk assignment actions are unavailable



✅ Import Clients & Contacts

Controls whether users can import client and contact records from an Excel file.

What this permission allows

  • Import clients and contacts into Canopy using an Excel file

Important considerations

  • This permission is only available when both of the following permissions are enabled:

    • Create and Edit Clients & Contacts

    • Access to All Clients, Contacts, & Client Groups

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

When this permission is turned off

  • The Import option is removed from the Client List three-dot menu



✅ Export Clients & Contacts

Controls whether users can export client and contact data to a CSV file.

What this permission allows

  • Export clients and contacts to a CSV file

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

When this permission is turned off

  • All Export options are removed from the Client List, including:

    • The three-dot menu export option

    • The filtered export option next to the Edit Columns icon



✅ Manage Active/Inactive Clients

Controls whether users can change a client’s active status.

What this permission allows

  • Mark clients as inactive

  • Reactivate inactive clients

  • Update client status individually or in bulk

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

When this permission is turned off

  • The Make Inactive button on the client profile is disabled

  • The Make Inactive bulk action is removed

  • Users can still view inactive clients

  • Users cannot reactivate inactive clients



✅ Canopy Email AI

Controls whether users can generate emails using Canopy’s AI tools.

What this permission allows

  • Generate email content using Canopy Email AI while composing emails

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

When this permission is turned off

  • The AI button is removed from the email composer


✅ Canopy Email AI

Controls whether users can generate email content using Canopy’s AI tools.

What this permission allows

  • Generate email drafts using Canopy Email AI while composing emails

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

When this permission is turned off

  • The AI button is removed from the email composer



✅ Client Email

Controls whether users can view and send email correspondence for clients they have access to.

What this permission allows

  • View client email correspondence

  • Send emails to clients from Canopy

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

Other permissions affected

  • Turning this permission off automatically disables:

    • Show Email Content

    • Bulk Email

When this permission is turned off

  • The Communication tab is removed from the client record



✅ Show Email Content

Controls whether users can view the body and attachments of client emails.

What this permission allows

  • View email content and attachments on the Client Communication tab

  • Continue viewing emails where the user is a participant

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

  • Email account sharing settings in email integrations override this permission

When this permission is turned off

  • The Communication tab remains available

  • Users can see:

    • Email subject lines

    • Recipient (To:) fields

  • Email bodies and attachments are hidden and display an Email Locked message


✅ Bulk Email

Controls whether users can send emails to multiple clients at once.

What this permission allows

  • Send bulk emails to clients the user has access to

  • View bulk email history in Settings

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

When this permission is turned off

  • The Bulk Email option is removed from bulk actions

  • Bulk email history is removed from Settings



✅ Archive Clients & Contacts

Controls whether users can archive clients and contacts, removing them from active lists without permanently deleting them.

What this permission allows

  • Archive clients

  • Archive contacts

  • Remove archived records from the active client and contact lists

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

Other permissions affected

  • Turning this permission off automatically disables:

    • Delete Clients & Contacts

When this permission is turned off

  • The Archive button is removed from the client record

  • Bulk archive actions are removed

  • Users can still view archived clients and contacts

  • Users cannot merge contacts



✅ Delete Clients & Contacts

Controls whether users can permanently delete archived clients and contacts.

What this permission allows

  • Permanently delete clients from the archive

  • Permanently delete contacts from the archive

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with one of the following licenses:

    • Client Management

    • Tax Resolution

When this permission is turned off

  • The Delete option is removed from client and contact records

  • Users cannot delete contacts

  • Users can still archive clients and contacts



✅ Delete Client Groups

Controls whether users can permanently delete client groups.

What this permission allows

  • Permanently delete client groups

Important considerations

  • This permission is only available when Create and Edit Client Groups is enabled

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

When this permission is turned off

  • The Delete Client Group option is removed

  • Users can still edit existing client groups


✅ View Dashboard

Controls whether users can access the Clients reporting dashboard.

What this permission allows

  • View the Clients dashboard and related reporting

Important considerations

  • This permission only applies to users with a Client Management License

When this permission is turned off

  • The View Dashboard option is removed from the Clients menu
