How do I use the CCH Extract tool?

Run Canopy's CCH Extract tool to upload your downloaded CCH files into Canopy for migration.

Required: Windows computer with internet connection; downloaded CCH files from your firm.

Why it matters: The CCH Extract tool automates the upload and file organization process. Once running, it handles decompression and folder placement so you don't have to manually organize thousands of files.

Table of Contents

Before You Start

  • You've downloaded all your CCH files in batches and saved them (as zipped folders) to a single location. See Exporting Your Data from CCH if you haven't done this yet.

  • You have a dedicated computer that can stay connected to the internet and remain logged in for the duration of the upload. The tool may run for several hours or longer depending on your file volume.

Download and Run the CCH Extract Tool

  1. Download the cchextract.exe file from this link.

    • You may need to adjust your security settings to download and open the file.

  2. Find the cchextract.exe file (usually on your desktop or in your Downloads folder).

  3. Double-click the icon to run the tool.

  4. A command window will open and prompt: "Work directory for migration files"

    • Press Enter to accept the default directory.

    • Do not enter a new file path here unless your Data Migration Specialist instructs you to.

Enter Your Migration Credentials

The tool will prompt you to enter three pieces of information. Your Data Migration Specialist will email these to you.

  1. When prompted, enter your Tenant ID.

  2. Enter your Upload ID.

  3. Enter your Upload Secret.

📝 Note: Keep these credentials secure and only enter them when prompted by the tool.

Specify Your File Path and Start Upload

  1. When prompted, enter the file path where you saved your downloaded CCH ZIP files.

    • Example: C:\Users\YourName\Documents\CCH_Migration

    • This should be the folder containing all your zipped batch files.

  2. Press Enter to start the upload.

The CCH Extract tool will begin uploading all folders and files from the directory you specified.

While the upload is running:

  • Monitor the progress in the command window — you'll see files being uploaded.

  • In Canopy, you'll begin to see your folders appear in the Files section as they're uploaded.

  • Do not move folders out of the File Migration section during the upload process, as this can interrupt the migration.

  • Leave the tool running until it completes. This may take several hours depending on your file volume.

Once the tool finishes and closes, notify your Data Migration Specialist immediately so they can verify the migration and provide next steps.

Troubleshooting

To stop the tool:

If you need to pause or stop the extraction for any reason:

  1. Click inside the cchextract command window.

  2. Press Ctrl + C.

  3. The tool will finish its current task and then exit cleanly.

To restart the tool:

You can stop and restart the program as many times as needed. The tool will remember where it left off and resume from that point.

If the tool stalls or crashes:

  1. Close the window and restart the tool (see steps above).

  2. The tool should resume normally.

  3. If the tool does not restart or continues to crash, contact your Data Migration Specialist immediately for assistance.

Summary

This article covered how to download and run the CCH Extract tool, enter your migration credentials, and specify the file path for upload. Once the tool completes, notify your Data Migration Specialist to proceed with verification and next steps.
