How do I install the File Migration Agent (FMA) and migrate my File Cabinet documents into Canopy?

The File Migration Agent (FMA) is a desktop tool that scans your File Cabinet folders and uploads your firm's document history into Canopy — it won't capture any files added or changed after the migration begins.

Migrating from File Cabinet moves your firm's entire document history into Canopy in one pass, so client files live in a single system instead of being split across two.

Before you begin

Have the following ready before you start:

  • File Cabinet data path — your Migration Specialist needs this before migration can begin. See Find your File Cabinet data path below.

  • Canopy login credentials — your standard Canopy login.

  • IT access — if your firm has strict security settings, your IT team may need to temporarily whitelist the FMA so it can download and run.

Find your File Cabinet data path

  1. Log in to File Cabinet.

  2. Go to Setup > System Configuration > Data Locations.

  3. Copy the value in the Path field and send it to your Migration Specialist.

Install and run the File Migration Agent

  1. Download the FMA for your operating system:

  2. Open the application and log in with your Canopy credentials.

    • Once the tool starts, don't add or change any files or folders — the FMA won't capture updates made after the process begins.

  3. Allow the FMA to run.

    • The FMA first builds a manifest: a pre-migration report that scans your folders and lists every file slated for upload. Empty folders are skipped automatically.

    • This can take a while depending on your total file size and internet speed. We recommend starting the migration at the end of your workday and letting it run overnight.

Best practices during migration

  • Set your computer to stay awake and keep a stable internet connection for the full duration of the upload.

  • Don't move or change any files inside Canopy while the migration is running — it can interfere with the job completing.

  • Remove the password from any password-protected drawers before you start. The FMA skips protected drawers, so anything still locked won't migrate.

Next steps

When the FMA shows the job is finished, notify your Migration Specialist.

  • They'll perform a final review and give you instructions for what comes next.

Summary

The File Migration Agent uploads your firm's document history from File Cabinet into Canopy in a single overnight run, skipping empty folders and password-protected drawers. Grab your File Cabinet data path first, let the tool run without touching your files, and notify your Migration Specialist once the job completes.
