What Integrations and API Access Does Canopy Offer?

This reference lists the apps Canopy connects to today, the tax software that can save files into Canopy, and what the Canopy Public API can and can't do.

Plans and permissions: Built integrations are available on all plans. API access needs the Plus or Premium plan and isn't included in Standard.

Connecting the tools your firm already uses means you enter client information once, so you don't retype it in three places during tax season. When Canopy doesn't have a built connection to a tool, your IT person or developer can build one with the Canopy Public API.

What the Canopy Public API Covers

The current Canopy Public API (v4) has 37 endpoints. Its full documentation and OpenAPI spec are public on the developer portal, with no login required, so your developer can check what's available before building anything. For more detail, see Canopy Open API Documentation.

Not available yet

The API does not support:

  • Webhooks - Canopy doesn't push a notification when data changes. To keep systems in sync, have your integration check the API on a schedule (polling), for example every few minutes.

Legacy API (v2 and v3). The older API still works, and no shutoff date has been set. It mostly covers clients and contacts. Build anything new on v4, because that's where new endpoints are added.

Key Terms

Term

Meaning

API

A way for two systems to exchange data automatically, without anyone copying it by hand.

Integration

A finished connection between Canopy and another app. You turn it on.

Endpoint

One thing the API can do, such as "get a list of clients".

Read / write

Read pulls data out of Canopy. Write adds or changes data in Canopy.

API key

The credential that proves a request comes from your firm.

Rate limit

The cap on how many calls you can make per minute.

Quota

The cap on total calls per rolling 30 days.

Polling

Checking the API on a schedule to pick up changes.

Webhook

A notification Canopy would send the moment data changes. Not available.

OpenAPI spec

A machine-readable description of every endpoint. Developers import it to start building.

API Limits

The API has two limits:

Limit

Plus

Premium

Calls per minute

120

120

Calls per rolling 30 days

150,000

No cap

The monthly limit applies to your whole firm, across every API key, not per team member.

Generate an API Key

Firms on Plus or Premium can generate manage an API key.

  1. Go to Profile icon > Settings > API Management.

  2. Click Generate API Key and add the steps that follow.

  3. Copy the key to use for integrations.

Built Integrations

A built integration is a finished connection between Canopy and another app. You turn it on, and no one has to build anything. To connect one, see Setting Up Integrations.

👉 Good to know: Filed is in Closed Beta. General Access is coming soon!

Integrations Through Zapier

These apps connect to Canopy through Zapier. They aren't turned on inside Canopy the way built integrations are. Connect through Zapier to sync contact and client data.

Tax Software File Saves

You can print files from these tax packages straight into Canopy using the Canopy Desktop Assistant's print driver. For setup, see How to Print Files to Canopy Using the Desktop Assistant.

  • CCH Axcess Tax

  • Drake Tax

  • Intuit ProConnect

  • Intuit ProSeries

  • Lacerte

  • TaxWise

  • UltraTax

👉 Good to know: A file save moves the file into Canopy. It doesn't sync client data, return status or e-file status between the two systems.

Integrations Coming Soon

These integrations are planned:

Integration

Category

What it will do

HubSpot

CRM

Keeps clients and contacts in sync between HubSpot and Canopy, so you don't enter the same information twice.

SharePoint

Document storage

Saves client files from SharePoint into the right client folder in Canopy.

CCH Axcess

Tax prep

Two-way connection covering client sync, return status, e-file status and return PDFs.

Intuit ProConnect

Tax prep

Client sync, returns into tasks, and return, e-file and e-signature status.

Note: Until the CCH Axcess and ProConnect connections are released, both programs work as file saves only.

Troubleshooting

The API returns a 429 error. Your firm has hit one of its limits. The error tells you which limit you hit, where your usage stands and when the limit resets.

  1. Read the error to see whether you hit the per-minute limit or the 30-day limit.

  2. For the per-minute limit, wait for the reset time and then retry. Spread scheduled calls out so they don't all run in the same minute.

  3. For the 30-day limit, check how often your integration polls, since polling less often uses fewer calls. Firms that regularly need more than 150,000 calls a month can move to Premium, which has no monthly cap.

Summary

Canopy has built integrations you turn on, file saves from seven tax packages, and a public API on Plus and Premium for connections your firm builds itself. Check the developer portal for what the API covers, and keep each integration within the firm-wide limits.
