What Is Canopy Coworker?
Coworker is an AI assistant built into Canopy. You describe a task in plain language, such as Find clients who haven't returned their engagement letter, and Coworker looks up the clients, engagements, tasks, documents and billing involved, then does the work or drafts it for your review.
It can answer questions about your firm's work, take multi-step actions in Canopy, and run recurring tasks on a schedule as automated jobs.
Can I Ask Coworker What It Can Do?
Yes. In a session, ask What can you do? or What can't you do? Coworker lists the work it handles, what it does only with your approval, and its limits, such as working only with your Canopy data.
To check a specific task before you start, ask Can you [draft engagement letters for my new clients]? What would you need from me?, then try a small version to confirm.
Who Can Use Coworker and How Do I Turn It On?
The open beta starts November 2, 2026, for firms on the Standard, Plus and Premium plans. Firms on legacy modules can ask their Account Manager or Sales about access.
Click your profile picture or initials at the bottom left, then select Settings.
Select Experimental Features.
Turn on Canopy Coworker.
Does Coworker Do Anything Without Asking Me?
Coworker looks up information without asking. Before it creates drafts, changes records, sends emails or other communication, takes financial actions, works on many records at once, or deletes or archives anything, it asks for your approval by default.
The Auto execute mode only skips showing you a plan first; it doesn't skip security approvals.
When Coworker needs your OK, a Security review required card explains the change in plain English and lists the clients seen in the session, and you click Allow once or Deny. Coworker also stops for approval whenever it would combine reading sensitive information with taking an action, especially across several clients, no matter how its settings are configured. A session waiting on your approval shows a yellow dot in the Coworker sidebar, and an automated job shows Pending approval.
Should I Use Auto Execute or Plan Mode?
Use Plan mode when a change touches many clients or records, involves client communication or billing, sets up an automated job, or is something you haven't asked Coworker to do before.
Coworker shows its plan in the Review Plan panel, and nothing changes until you click Approve plan and start actions. Use Auto execute for questions, lists and routine changes to one record.
In either mode, Coworker still asks before any action your firm's trust settings mark Review required.
Can an Admin Control What Coworker Is Allowed to Do?
Yes. In Settings > Coworker Settings > Trust, admins set a trust level for each type of action:
Action type | Includes | Default |
View data | Fetching and viewing records | Always allow |
Create drafts | Adding new entries | Review required |
Send communications | Emails, SMS, notifications | Review required |
Modify records | Updating existing entries | Review required |
Financial actions | Invoices, payments, credits | Review required |
Bulk operations | Actions affecting multiple records | Review required |
Delete or archive | Removing or archiving entries | Review required |
Each type can be set to Always allow, Review required or Blocked. Admins can also pin a single action to its own trust level under Overrides. Changing these settings takes the Coworker Admin permission in Settings > Access and Permissions, which admins have by default.
Admins also decide who can use Coworker at all. A team member with only the Coworker permission can use it for their own work and set up automated jobs, but those jobs run only after someone with Approve Automated Jobs approves them.
Can Coworker See Data I Can't?
No. Coworker works with your Canopy permissions, so it can only see and change what you could see and change yourself. If your role can't do something in Canopy, Coworker won't do it for you. Each firm's data stays separate from every other firm's.
Is My Client Data Used to Train AI?
No. Your firm's data is not used to train AI models.
Can I See What Coworker Did?
Yes. In any session, click the session details icon at the top right and open Action History to see every lookup and change Coworker made, with the time. While it works, Coworker also lists each step in plain English, such as Listed billing rates, and you can click a step for the details.
For automated jobs, open the job from Coworker > Automated Jobs and click a run to see what happened. To follow up, reply to the run or accept Coworker's suggested fix, and it becomes a session you can keep working in.
Can I Undo Something Coworker Did?
Not automatically. That's why Coworker asks before it makes changes by default: you can review and deny an action before it happens.
Some actions can't be reversed at all, such as an email that has already been sent, so those require approval by default.
What Does Coworker Remember?
Coworker saves preferences and knowledge about your firm as memories so it doesn't have to ask again.
It builds them from Coworker Onboarding, and you can ask it directly, such as Remember that I sign all my emails with "Best regards". If a new memory conflicts with an old one, Coworker replaces the old one.
Find them in Settings > Coworker Settings > Memories. A Private memory applies only to you and a Team memory applies to your whole firm. You can search memories, add one yourself, and set how long Coworker should remember it.
Does Everyone at My Firm Need to Complete Onboarding?
Each person completes the topics on their own Coworker Onboarding page, which are tailored to their role. Coworker starts from what Canopy already knows about their role and your firm's services, and onboarding doesn't use credits.
Does Coworker Make Mistakes?
Yes, it can. Coworker uses AI, so check its results before you act on them, especially counts and lists you'll share with clients.
If an answer looks wrong, open Action History to see what it looked up, ask a more specific follow-up, or click Feedback below the task box to tell us.
Are There Limits on What Coworker Can Do?
Each user has a monthly credit allocation that resets at the start of each month. A banner warns you as you get close, and Coworker pauses when you reach it. See: How do Canopy Coworker credits work?
Before Coworker changes a large batch of records, it runs a small test batch and asks someone to check it first.
Some actions are off-limits by design. For example, Coworker won't process payments.
Coworker works with your data in Canopy only, not other apps.
Does Coworker Cost Extra?
Coworker is in Experimental Features during the open beta, and you can use it as much as you want each month, up to your credit allocation. The allocation renews monthly, and onboarding doesn't use credits.
During the tax-season promotion, if you reach your limit you can claim a one-time 5,000-credit gift from the banner. If you need more credits after that, reach out to Canopy Support.
How Is Coworker Different From Insights?
Insights reports show you what's happening in your firm. Coworker acts on it: it can create tasks, draft emails and update records for you.
During the open beta, Coworker uses Insights to answer reporting questions, and the two can return different numbers for the same question.
How Do I Send Feedback About Coworker?
